August is Unemployment Awareness Month

Every August · Since 2025

August is Unemployment Awareness Month

Unemployment is a constant part of life. This month is a call for compassion and action for the people looking for work, and for the employers and neighbors who can help.

Why August?

Back-to-school season can be the first major hit to a household’s budget. For families already stretched by a job loss, August is when the pressure shows, so that is when we show up.

Unemployment Awareness Month was first launched on August 1, 2025, by Peter Souza. Read the original announcement on LinkedIn (opens in a new tab).

“Unemployment is a constant part of life. No matter the economic climate, there are always individuals seeking work, and with technology advancing at an accelerated pace, unemployment is a human challenge that will affect us all, in one way or another.”

Peter Souza, founder

Three ways to take part

Let’s use Unemployment Awareness Month to demonstrate compassion and action.

  1. Wear the ribbon

Put on the green and white ribbon in August, or add it to your profile picture and posts, to show that people between jobs are seen and supported.

    Get the ribbon assets
  2. Hire or refer

Open a door. Interview someone who is between jobs, pass along a lead, or make an introduction. Make a difference, one hire at a time.

  3. Support locally and check on friends

Strength is in the community: shop local, buy local, volunteer locally, and check in on friends who may be job hunting.

    Ways to get involved
